Moab 2008

So the end of March means one thing in the Monk Family...MOAB! Of course you all know how addicted Steve is to dirt biking, well his dad is too. We went along with Steve's family and our close family friends, the Kinghorns. It was so much fun, but I know it made Steve miss his friend Connel since this was the first time in a long time that they didn't go together. Thanks a lot for moving to Ohio Connel! (Just kiddding-we love you.) We still had a ton of fun though.

DAY 1: Wednesday
We got to The Lazy Lizard Hostel-a run down house made up of two trailer homes-where we stayed for the week at around 4pm, then the guys and kids rode Poison Spider Mesa. The rest of us got situated into the house, got dinner ready, and Emily & I took a well needed nap. It took 8 hours to get to Moab, UT...that's a long time for a baby to be in a car seat but Em did so well!

DAY 2: Thursday
While the guys went dirt biking the moms and kids drove 2 hours to Mesa Verde, Colorado to see the Indian ruins. On the way we stopped in Monticello to see the temple. It's the first mini temple built and was gorgeous...but out in the middle of NOWHERE.

Mesa Verde was incredible. It was amazing to see all the cliff dwellings from over 800 years ago that have remained mostly in tact. We also got to see some dwellings on the Mesas from around 500A.D. I wish Steve had gone with us, because being the geologist that he is I know he would've been fascinated. It was beautiful.

The guys rode the San Rafael Swell and made it to the trail head of 5 Miles of Hell. Wynn (Steve's dad) joked that it was 20 miles of hell to get to 5 Miles of Hell. It was extra exhausting for Steven because he rode much of the trail three times. He rode Loren and Wynn's bikes up the really tough parts; what a nice guy!

Day 3: Friday

We all headed to Gemini Bridges where the guys and kids rode their dirt bikes and the rest of us followed in the truck. We got a really cute picture of Emily sitting on Dad's dirt bike. We hiked out to the bridges which were amazing, but scared me to death. I'm very afraid of heights and if was a LONG drop off those cliffs.

Afterwards the kids and the moms went shopping in downtown Moab. Usually Emily is not much of a shopper, but she slept most of the time and was very cooperative.

On their last day the guys rode Poison Spider Mesa and Golden Spike. It was sad for Steve to have the trip come to an end, because he knew we'd be going home to snowy Idaho where he won't be dirt biking for a very long time.

The rest of us were sad to leave the gorgeous weather. It was so sunny and warm the entire time we were there (in the high 60's and low 70's). On our drive home we called Grandma Hayes and she said it was 31 and snowing at home. How depressing! But what a fun trip. Moab is so pretty and we definitely made memories to last a lifetime...can't wait for next year!

Looks like you had a lot of fun. Makes me want summer even more looking at your pictures. Too bad will have tiny babies this summer so I'm not sure of how much camping we will be doing. :(
